What you need to make it

Ingredient notes & substitutions

  • Soda water can be substituted for another type of sparkling water - unflavored or with lemon or lime flavor
  • Soda water can also be swapped for a lemon/lime soda for a sweeter version
  • Lime needs to be fresh - lime juice in a bottle just won't do. But, you can switch it for lemon with some change to the flavor.
  • Crushed ice can be substituted for whole ice cubes, or omitted
  • Fresh mint - only use the leaves, as the stem can make it bitter

How to make it

  1. Add lime wedges and mint leaves to a highball glass - squeeze the lime wedges a bit while adding them to get a bit of the juice out immediately
  2. Using a muddler (or the handle of a wooden spoon), smash together the lime and mint until you've gotten most of the juice out of the limes
  3. Fill up with crushed ice
  4. Stir

Tips & tricks

  • If you don't have a muddler - use the handle of a wooden spoon instead
  • Don't muddle too much as the mint leaves can turn bitter if they're too crushed - which is why I squeeze the lime a bit first
  • Make it sweeter by swapping soda water for lemon/lime soda or adding sugar while muddling the lime and mint
  • Make it a cocktail by adding a shot of rum (for a classic Mojito), vodka or bourbon together with the crushed ice

Recipe FAQ

Can I make this with alcohol?

Yes - just add a shot of rum (for a classic Mojito), vodka, bourbon, cachaça or another type of spirit.

How can I make this Mojito Mocktail sweeter?

To make it sweeter, switch soda water for a lemon/lime soda or add some sugar when muddling the lime and mint.

How do I crush ice without an ice crusher?

Place ice cubes in a plastic bag inside a clean kitchen towel and use a wooden spoon as a hammer to crush the ice.

Recipe variations

Just like with the classic Mojito, this Mojito Mocktail can be varied in so many ways. Here are some delicious options, all of them added while muddling the lime & mint (for a lot of flavor) or just at the end (for a hint of flavor):

  • Fresh or frozen berries - raspberries, strawberries, blueberries or blackberries
  • Grapefruit - adds bitterness, either add a wedge or some fresh squeezed juice
  • Watermelon - without the peel
  • Pineapple - peeled
  • Pomegranate - seeds only
  • Cucumber - peeled
  • Orange or clementine - adds sweetness, either add a few wedges or some fresh squeezed juice
  • Fresh ginger or ginger shot/juice - for a spicy kick
  • Thinly sliced jalapeños - for a really spicy kick
